Paul Philippe (1870-1930) was born in Thorn, Poland, and was a pupil of Antonin Larroux. In 1900, he moved to Paris and he exhibited with success at all of the Salons in Paris. Working in bronze, bronze and ivory and pure ivory, Philippe worked for Friedrich Goldscheider, Les Neveux de J. Lehmann, Rosenthal und Maeder and Preiss & Kassler. His figures are sought-after worldwide by collectors. Amongst his most recognised works are
Le Reveil – The Awakening,
Russian Dancer and
Radha.
A photograph of an invitation card to the Preiss & Kassler stand at the 1930 Leipzig fair, illustrated in Alberto Shayo, Ferdinand Preiss: Art Deco Sculptor, 2005, p.49, shows the violin player by Philippe prominently displayed as one of the central exhibits in their stand.
